The Visitor

Everyone should have at least one experience with mice. We've had more than that. However, I don't recommend more, I think once is plenty.

When we were first married, we lived in the bottom level of a house. The rent was $250/month if that tells you anything. We had a really lovely landlord (honestly, nicest guy ever) who was the town mortician who resided in the funeral home that was right behind the house. Anyways, (that was all extra), our first Christmas, we had a 'visitor.' I thought something was peculiar when I was cleaning our kitchen one afternoon and noticed all of these black specks on the back of my counter. Hmmm... strange I thought. (We had plenty of mice growing up, but I was never the one doing the investigating or killing.) Then, that same day, I was making some pasta, and opened a drawer to get out one of my wooden spoons... there was a perfect little semi-circle nibbled off leaving wood shavings in my drawer. Even stranger... so of course, I called the rodent specialist, my mother. She will tell you horror stories of mice and cockroaches. I honestly hesitate to call b/c I'm afraid of how long she'll elaborate on each story and how many goosebumps I might have by the end. HOWEVER, she does deliver when it comes to knowledge and remedies. So, it was worth the call. "Oh, honey, you have a mouse! Have I ever told you about the time we lived in NC when your dad was in the Navy and...." By this point, I'm just like... SERIOUSLY... just tell me how to get rid of it.

We had our Christmas tree up, and since we had very few ornaments that first Christmas, I had made some gingerbread cookies to hang. We had some hanging too low to the ground apparently. We woke up the next morning to find the whole leg of a gingerbread man nibbled off. We couldn't believe it and we could not stop laughing! The war was on. Jonathan went to buy traps, set it up right under the tree, and then perfectly dangled a gingerbread man right over the trap. We went to bed that night all nervous and giggly (you could tell we were newlyweds... anything would excite us!) and wondering if we'd catch anything. We were not in bed more than 4 minutes when SNAP!... and then SWISH, SWISH, SWISH the tail swinging as it went down to it's death. I laid so still I couldn't move. When it stopped moving, Jonathan said, let's go check it out. I said NO... you go check it out!! End of story!

So, onto present day. Christmas morning Jonathan is making breakfast. He opens the pantry and finds these mini buckeyes that were a gift to Henry from my sister (Sorry Meg...) with a hole in the bag. Some had fallen out. He called Henry over and said, "Henry, did you get into these buckeyes? Wyatt, did you?" Once we assessed they were being completely honest, I felt this familiar feeling of dread come over me. Of course, Jonathan was like a school boy... "I'll get some traps, I'll set them, should we use cheese or PB? We're gonna kill this sucker! C'mon over boys... let me show you what it looks like when you have a mouse in the house." I don't know what happened to my carefree-ness, maybe 10 years of marriage and 3 kids later I lost my ability to be carefree about a mouse. Maybe it was the mouse terds in my pantry and in my skillets. Maybe it was the fact that the darn thing chewed on my Panko breadcrumb bag. Maybe it was that it was Christmas, did it always have to strike on a holiday?

The pictures tell the rest. As you can see, one of us was enjoying the show. Jonathan even decided to make our pictures festive. Thankfully, we have had no 'visitors' since this little guy. Merry Christmas buddy. (By the way, Dad, we really need to finish the trim in that pantry!!)

Happy 3rd Birthday Wyatt!

Wyatt turns three today! We had his b-day party last night, and it was very fun! He wanted Aunt Beth to make him a Superman cake with his face on Superman. It was 'super'cute and 'super' good :)

Wyatt, you are very care free. You love life, are easily excitable, very humorous, never like to take things seriously (even discipline!), and miss Henry when he is at preschool. You like to be called Superman, love puzzles (and are very good at them), are constantly playing while you are eating, don't mind playing by yourself, talk in a very sing-songy voice, and you like to get up early! We LOVE you! You are at that emotional age, though, where you can go from 0 to 60 in about 1.4 seconds! It keeps us on our toes in helping you to use your words to voice your frustrations rather than your tears. We are constantly reminded of how quickly a 3-year old can "turn on" and "turn off" the tears!! :) It is such a joy for us to watch you interact with Henry and Myles. You love them both so much and you are very affectionate. You like to show your love by touching, hugging, kissing, and cuddling.

We are so thankful for you and the bright spot you bring to everyday!

Wrap-up of 2010

Ok, I think I've caught up as much as I'm going to for 2010. Time flies with these little ones and it's so hard to keep up with documenting all of the things that are stuck in your head. There are so many moments we tell ourselves... we're not going to forget that b/c it was so darn cute or priceless or hilarious... but then the next moments come and we do forget! I love re-reading through the blog - so many stories attached to pictures. Such sweet, sweet memories!! We had a great Christmas with the boys. They were very grateful for all that they received - they were at a really fun age this year! It made the giving all the more enjoyable! I think the cap guns were their favorites. Great idea, right? We had the whole parental discussion as to where we stand with guns, and all that stuff... what the rules would be, etc. Then, the first week back at preschool, they do an activity for the hallway and they had to write, "On holiday break, I ____ _____ _____." There were lots of things kids put... I built a snowman, I went to Grandma's, I opened presents.... then there's Henry's, right at the top... I GOT A GUN. Nice. His teacher said she tried to get him to write something else, like I got a holster, or I got a hat, but nope. There was no convincing.

Rainforest Cafe

*Newlyweds! Sona snuck this great shot... Now we know Rainforest Cafe can be romantic place to eat!*

While in Florida, we all went to the Rainforest Cafe at Animal Kingdom. What a fun place for kids! The boys really, really enjoyed it. I think the noises and size of everything made them both a bit timid! It was such a fun family outing altogether -- We also celebrated Dad's birthday a little early since it is on January 1st.

the wedding

Can I really blog wedding pictures when there are none of the bride and groom?? I apologize, and hopefully more will follow, but since we were both in the wedding, neither of us were taking lots of pictures! Josh (Jonathan's brother) got married on Monday, December 20th in Florida. Here are just a few snapshots of the day. It was an amazing location! They could have done no decorating, and it still would have been beautiful!

Josh and Lori did a beautiful job of keeping the wedding simple and elegant. The boys did great... they didn't do so hot at the rehearsal, but we had to cut them some slack considering we had just gotten in at midnight the night before. However, the day of the wedding they were on their A-game. Whew... :) Myles sat with Grandma the whole time all cuddled up in his tie.

December 2010

OK...

1. We decorated a gingerbread house which was so fun and hilarious! The kids loved it! And it turned out nothing like the box suggested... which was even funnier!
2. We really enjoyed the December snow!! What a blast!
3. We made cut-out cookies and frosted them and ate them and ate them again.
4. We watched Myles smile a lot!

Then we were off to Florida for J's brother's wedding... December was a full month of activities, and while there were some health hurdles, we were grateful for how the Lord worked it all out. As always, His plans are better than ours.

Smiles with Myles - Volume 6

We're fairly sure he's eating fine... and thankfully the recent update from the team at the Thomas Center is that they think the same! :) We met with them again on December 28th. His fine motor skills are a little above average for a Downs kid, and his gross motor skills are right on. They were concerned about his hearing, so we have an appointment with the ENT at Children's this coming Tuesday. However, all in all, it was an excellent appt. And Myles seems to be the happiest baby on the block! We just started food this past week. He is slowly getting used to it, but taking his time. Apparently, he is not hurting for more nourishment :) We are so thankful for another good report.
